Late on 11 January 2024, Britain and the USA launched attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen. In recent weeks, Houthi forces have been targeting ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea in solidarity with Gaza, where the state of Israel has reportedly killed 9,600 children since October 2023.
This Western bombardment of Yemen comes as countries in the global south have led the way internationally by supporting South Africa’s International Court of Justice case against Israel for genocidal acts in Gaza.
The UK and USA previously supported Saudi Arabia’s devastating war against the Houthis in Yemen, which started in 2015, but Al Jazeera says this is “the first time” US-led forces have officially joined in. As Declassified UK has reported, however, some UK troops were previously on the ground in Yemen training Saudi troops.
